THE FOUR REALMS OF YUGENKAI

The spirit realm of Yūgenkai is divided into four interconnected realms, each separated by immense distances and powerful spiritual boundaries. Together they form a vast cosmology inhabited by spirits, yōkai, gods, and ancient beings whose influence extends across both the mortal and divine worlds.

From the haunted lands where wandering souls gather to the celestial domain of the supreme gods, every realm possesses its own history, inhabitants, and role within the balance of existence.

Takamagahara (高天原)

Sacred Realm of the Supreme Gods

The highest and largest of Yūgenkai's four realms, Takamagahara is home to only a handful of deities. Reserved for the most powerful divine beings, it is the seat of the supreme gods whose authority extends across all creation.

Among its notable residents are Amaterasu, Goddess of the Sun; Susanō, God of Storms; and Tsukuyomi, Keeper of Eternal Rhythms.

Nakatsuhara (中津原)

Lower Heaven — Realm of the Eight Million Gods

Beneath Takamagahara lies Nakatsuhara, home to the Eight Million Gods. Across this vast realm, deities oversee every aspect of the natural world—from the winds and rivers to mountains, harvests, and the changing seasons.

While more tranquil than the realms below, Nakatsuhara is still inhabited by divine beings whose power far exceeds that of even the mightiest yōkai.

Tōjikai (凍時海)

The Bridge Between Heaven and Earth

Separating Nakatsuhara from the Surface Realm lies the Ocean of Frozen Time, an endless celestial sea watched over by Ryūjin, the Dragon God.

More than a body of water, the ocean serves as the bridge between heaven and earth. As its eternal keeper, Ryūjin safeguards the passage of spirits between the mortal and divine realms, preserving the balance upon which Yūgenkai depends. Few possess either the strength—or the permission—to cross its timeless waters.

Chijōkai (地上界)

The World of Spirits

The Surface Realm is home to the overwhelming majority of spirits and yōkai. Ancient shrines, forgotten villages, dense forests, towering mountains, and abandoned battlefields have become the domain of supernatural beings born from myth, folklore, and lingering emotion.

It is here that Cesara's journey begins, where humanity's legends take physical form and every path leads deeper into the mysteries of Yūgenkai.

Yet even these four realms are not the end. Beyond the heavens, it is said there exists something that even the gods refuse to speak of.
